Yarning Circle

If you were to take part in a Fire Pit activity at Morden, you would see:

• Two buckets of water – one for putting out the fire and one with a damp cloth in case of emergency.
• A first aid kit – in case of emergency.
• Fires kept to a safe size and height – within the clearly defined safe fire-making area marked around the fire pit.
• A fire safety talk at the start – children recalling the Fire Pit Safety Rules.
• All children seated on the Yarning Circle a safe distance from the fire – children are only to approach the fire in small groups under close adult supervision if, for example, toasting marshmallows.
• A safe and allocated seating plan – any child or adult with asthma or breathing difficulties NOT to be seated downwind of the fire.
• Singing or rhyming games – non-active games that can be played with the children sitting or standing only.
• Respectful discussion – children can pose their own questions or adults can provide the stimulus; children placing their hand out, palm facing up to show they wish to contribute.

If you were to take part in a Yarning Circle activity at Morden, you would see:

• All children seated on the Yarning Circle a safe distance from the fire pit – regardless of whether the fire is lit, children will follow the fire safety rules in this area of the playground.
• Singing or rhyming games – non-active games that can be played with the children sitting or standing only.
• Respectful discussion – children can pose their own questions or adults can provide the stimulus; children placing their hand out, palm facing up to show they wish to contribute.
